SUMMARY:Building Post-Election Common Ground
DESCRIPTION:The Ashland Sunrise Project (ASP) announces “Building Post-Election Common Ground\,” the fourth presentation in its speaker series. This event will take place on November 12\, 2024\, from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at Carpenter Hall\, 44 S. Pioneer\, Ashland. \n“Building Post-Election Common Ground” is a conversation between Mike and Emily Green co-founders of Common Ground Conversations on Race (CGC)\, \, Taylor Stewart\, founder of the Oregon Remembrance Project\, and host Tara Houston\, Community and Engagement Manager\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). \nThe post-election narrative in this nation\, regardless of who wins\, will be of key importance. Political messaging and media play a significant role in the influence of perspectives nationwide. \nIn this talk\, Mike & Emily Green will introduce paradigm-shifting new knowledge and understanding of racial dynamics in American society today through an informed lens of historical context. \nAre there issues that can build a common ground of understanding? Yes! But note the nuance. Developing an understanding among people who disagree doesn’t mean they will find agreement. Our focus is to establish a common ground of knowledge and understanding\, not necessarily agreement. \n“Developing an understanding among people who disagree doesn’t mean they will find agreement.” Mike Green \nThe evening’s conversation will highlight how we can build a common ground of understanding. \nMike Green is a nationally known cultural economist\, author\, speaker\, and radio host. Emily Green has a background in social work\, specializing in wraparound services for families in distress. Mike and Emily are married co-founders of Common Ground Conversations on Race in America (CGC)\, which provides a trademarked “Conversations Journey” process that has a four-year record of success with institutional and organizational clients\, such as: municipalities\, police departments\, K-12 school districts and higher education\, county library systems\, community organizations and evangelical churches. \n  \nASP is a truth and reconciliation coalition addressing our community’s history as a Sundown Town. Reconciliation includes remembrance: understanding the harm that was caused; repair: putting an end to harm as it continues today; and redemption: creating good from a story of harm. \nAshland Sunrise Project\, a part of Oregon Remembrance Project (ORP)\, aims to help former sundown towns develop new identities as “sunrise communities\,” the opposite of a sundown town. Sunrise communities are places in which everyone can feel safe\, respected\, and can call home. \nAshland Sunrise Project is an Ashland Together Initiative in partnership with the Oregon Remembrance Project. We thank the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for venue support of this event. This program was made possible in part by a grant from Oregon Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nAny views\, findings\, conclusions\, or recommendations expressed in this event\, do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities \n

SUMMARY:An Empowering Conversation About Fire\, Climate Change and Community.
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, July 15th\, 6:30 to 8:00 pm PT\, Carpenter Hall (at OSF) \nSpecial Guests: \n \nMarko Bey – Founder & Executive Director Lomakatsi Restoration Project \nBelinda Brown – Tribal Partnerships Director \nCollaborative Forest Restoration: A Win-Win for People and Nature \nIn the face of climate change and the new reality of wildfire in the West\, collaborative\, community-based forest restoration is a proven solution to help protect communities and natural resources. Lomakatsi will share their model for leveraging federal and state agreements with local partnerships to build long-term\, landscape-scale forest and watershed stewardship projects. These agreements can bring millions of federal dollars to help create fire-adapted ecosystems and communities\, while supporting sustainable jobs and local economies. This hands-on stewardship approach enhances wildlife habitat and helps prepare the landscape for beneficial fire. \nElevating Tribal Nations in Restoration Initiatives \nLomakatsi will discuss the importance of meaningful engagement with Tribal Nations and tribal communities\, and how ecological restoration—combined with indigenous fire knowledge—can help promote tribal sovereignty\, support co-management\, and protect cultural beneficial resources. \nThe presentation will include the screening of the 20-minute short film Tribal Hands on the Land\, centered on Lomakatsi’s Tribal Youth Ecological Forestry Training Program. The film explores how collaboration with tribes and tribal communities is setting the stage for the return of cultural fire and building more resilient landscapes and communities. \nAbout Lomakatsi \nFor nearly 30 years\, Ashland-based nonprofit Lomakatsi Restoration Project has partnered with local\, state\, and federal agencies\, Tribal Nations\, nonprofits\, and many others to restore thousands of acres of forests and miles of streams. Through this work\, they advance social equity by layering in education\, tribal partnerships\, and workforce training programs while leading an all hands on deck approach to create more resilient ecosystems and communities. \n  \nIt’s fire season.   \nBe part of the solution. \nBring your friends and neighbors. \n  \nPartners:  Ashland.News\, OSF and Ashland Together \nWe invite you to subscribe to Ashland.news to keep abreast of what’s happening in our town. \n \n  \n  \n  \n

Sanderson\, Taylor Stewart\, founder of the Oregon Remembrance Project\, and host Tara Houston\, Community and Engagement Manager\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). \nSara Sanderson\, author of The Place We Make: Breaking the Legacy of Legalized Hate\, will share her own story of discovering that her ancestors participated in exiling Jacob Vanderpool from Oregon City in 1851 under the exclusion laws that prevented Black people from residing in Oregon. The group meets each year to share ideas and information from across the “Mythical State of Jefferson” and is not affiliated with the modern political movement of the same name. \nLearn More \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZachary Stocks is a public historian\, interpreter\, and the Executive Director of Oregon Black Pioneers. SUMMARY:Uncovering Oregon's Black History
DESCRIPTION:People of African descent have lived and worked in Oregon since before the founding of the earliest English-speaking settlements in the Americas. Despite this\, the popular narrative of our state’s history excludes the experiences of African Americans before the mid-20th century. This erasure is the result of historic legal and social marginalization that contributes to the ignorance of Oregon’s Black heritage\, as well as influences contemporary disparities in housing access\, community investment\, and policing. For this presentation\, Oregon Black Pioneers will attempt to correct the record by highlighting key individuals and events that characterize Oregon’s unique and centuries-old Black history. \n  \nFREE EVENT \nMariah Rocker\, Public Programs and Exhibits Manager \nOregon Black Pioneers \nMonday\, March 18\, 6:00 –7:30 PM \nOSF Carpenter Hall\, 44 S Pioneer St\, Ashland \n \nAbout Oregon Black Pioneers \nOregon Black Pioneers is Oregon’s only historical society dedicated to preserving and presenting the experiences of African Americans statewide. For more than 30 years\, they have illuminated the seldom-told stories of people of African descent in Oregon through our engaging exhibits\, public programs\, publications\, and historical research.

SUMMARY:4 Week Online Course: Unwelcomed - Oregon’s History of Exclusion
DESCRIPTION:A 4-Week Series \nAshland Together\, in collaboration with other community partners\, is proud to present “Unwelcomed: Understanding Oregon’s History Exclusion.” This 4-week online course is led by Portland State University Professor Kristin Teigen. \nProfessor Teigen will take us through the deliberate steps taken to construct Oregon\, first as a territory and later as a state\, to exclude non-white people. \nWoven into each week\, we will discuss Southern Oregon’s specific history with regard to race. \nWeek 1: Exclusions\, Genocide\, Segregation\, and Deportation\nBeginning with the construct of race\, we then embark on a journey through Oregon’s complex and often troubling history. Who was in Oregon before it became a state? What led to its founding? Dive deep into the origins of hate groups like the KKK and investigate discriminatory policies such as the Chinese Exclusion Act. Understand how Oregon’s history is marred by acts of deportation\, exclusion\, and even genocide. \nWeek 2:  Displacement and the Arrival of Immigrants\nMoving from the origin of Oregon\, we will travel into the early 20th century to examine the creation of segregation and systems of displacement\, the arrival of immigrant groups\, and we will set the stage for the transformation of World War II. \nWeek 3: World War II and Its Aftermath\nThe third week takes us to a critical period: World War II and its enduring impact on Oregon. Explore the devastating effects of Japanese internment camps\, Latinx deportations\, the creation of Vanport and more\,  and the practice of redlining\, all of which continue to shape Oregon’s communities today. \nWeek 4: The “Golden Age” and Modern Day\nThe 1950’s\, the supposed Golden Age of the U.S. brought dramatic transformations\, particularly with Indigenous communities\, displacements within Black communities\, the aftermath of internment and continued deportations. Moving into modern-day Oregon\, we will look at how the past has created the realities of our day-to-day lives and the continuing struggle for justice.   \nCourse Details:\n\nWhen: Every Thursday beginning February 1st\nTime: 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm PT\nPlatform: Zoom (link will be provided on the day of each class)\nCost: $90\nCapacity: Limited to 35 participants\n\nThis course emphasizes active participation\, open dialogue\, and is designed to be a safe space for all attendees. \nPlease write to ashlandtogether@gmail.com for information regarding full or partial scholarships. \nUnwelcomed: Understanding Oregon’s History Exclusion. is sponsored by our partners: Peace House\, BASE–Black Alliance and Social Empowerment\, and Rogue Valley Unitatian Universalist Fellowship. 50% of all proceeds will be donated to BASE \nInstructor: Kristin Teigen\, MA\, M.Ed. is an educator at Portland State University\, where she teaches the history of BIPOC communities in Oregon and issues of women’s homelessness. SUMMARY:Free 2 Hour Webinar: Seeds of a White Utopia
DESCRIPTION:Ashland Together and our community partners invite you to join Portland State University history professor Kristin Teigen for an introduction to understanding Oregon’s difficult racial past. \nWhat You Will Learn \nThe goal of this 2 hour webinar is to better understand our state’s largely unexamined history of discrimination with the hope of empowering us all to be part of the vision for a more equitable and inclusive community. Knowing our complicated origin story goes a long way in making that vision a reality.\nProfessor Teigen’s presentation begins by exploring the early American events that set the stage for Oregon’s foundation as a ‘whites-only’ territory. She will delve into topics like the construct of race\, Bacon’s Rebellion\, Manifest Destiny and the Missouri Compromise\, significant historical moments that planted the seeds for exclusionary practices that would set the stage of discrimination for generations to come. Among other things\, you will also learn about early relations with Indigenous tribes and what led to the widespread seizure of tribal lands. \nInstructor: Kristin Teigen\, MA\, M.Ed. is an educator at Portland State University\, where she teaches the history of BIPOC communities in Oregon and issues of women’s homelessness. She’s also an anti-oppression activist\, working in feminist\, queer\, environmental justice and people of color movements\, and a trained anti-oppression facilitator. \nSpecial thanks to our Community Partners: BASE and Peace House. \n
